The story of the Lindenhof

More than 90 years ago a carver and hunter named Huggler built a small restaurant, deliberately hideing it between two big lime trees. A family on their sunday walk or a couple in love would eventually find it after a short hike on a small trail. Soon, the small restaurant was famous for its juicy game plates or the huge pieces of cake with fresh picked berries from the woods. Most of the times, though, some guests were too tired to go back home. In the beginning they were content with the little heystack in the small barn. But soon enough, people were asking for simple rooms to stay over night. So this was the beginning of the "Pension Lindenhof".

In 1922 the Lindenhof-property was bought by Miss Hedwig Michel, the founder of the Horticultural School for Young Ladies. The school had been in the Chalet Bettina for the last five years. After getting married to Mr. Carl Fotsch, who was manager of the estate on Schloss Chartreuse in Hünibach near Thoune, Ms. Michel continually improved and expanded the school. Mr. Eduard Jobin, Mr. Peter Grossmann and the Egli-Brothers, Jakob and Heinrich, bought the bordering pieces of land. At that time, the Horticultural School for Young Ladies was the best school of this kind for women. But the end of the school was soon to be. After World War II, in the late forties, early fifties, the school was closed down.

Stairs and lanes, terrasses and beds for sprouting deteriorated more and more, since there was nobody to take care of the estate anymore. Piece by piece, the school was sold (the nursery near the Catholic Church, the Bannholz, the Blumenhof, the Lindengut, etc.). The rest of the Lindenhof was made into a pension. But here too, time was eating away at the buildings.

In December of 1964, the run down "Pension Lindenhof" and the 21.000 m2 of land around it were bought by Haymo and Heidi Fotsch-Wermuth, who had a big nursery in the Baselbiet.

Now, they had to wake the house and park from it's Sleeping Beauty-sleep. The park was cleared, a good access road was built and the main building was freed of some annexes. In 1972 the indoor pool was built and in 1984 the "Silberdistel", a nursery specialising in herbs, was added to the Hotel. In 1985 the Résidence opened it's doors, having only rooms with views over the lake. All the buildings were remodeled and the beautiful Brienzerstube was built over the existing restaurant.

Ever since, we have created new Adventure Rooms or remodeled old ones. At the moment we are up-to-date and able to constantly surprise and take care of the big Lindenhof-Guest-Family.

You, as a guest of today, will be able to see what has been done in the past years. Be it on a personal visit or on a surf tour on our homepage, thank you for cruising by!
